Industry Standard Recommendation:
When you consider your garage door, you only ever think about the end product and how it’s all going to look. The majority of people never really consider the work that goes into it.
In order to receive the wonderful end product, you need to ensure you have every piece of hardware at your disposal. Of course, if you’re going to be manually installing it yourself, then you’ll need to know every aspect of the job.
When it comes to the work you put in, it’s wise to know the kinds of mounting hardware that will be used. This might not be something everyone is aware of, so it’s good to outline everything. Here, we’ll be going into a little detail regarding the kinds of mounting hardware that you’ll use when installing a garage door.
First, we’ll just quickly go through the kinds of garage doors that are typically installed on residential properties. Sectional and roll-up garage doors are the most popular and the kinds you’ll see regularly around residential areas. They are both, as the name suggests, rolled up neatly in a smooth fashion. Slide-to-the-side doors are very similar but move in a horizontal direction, as you’d expect.
Side-hinged garage doors are popular, too. They’re like traditional doors that you’d expect to see in the interior of a home. Tilt-up doors are similar to the first two we mentioned but will tilt up and outwards instead of moving directly upward.
Springs are the metal coils that will help out with the lifting and lowering of the garage door. They come in two varieties – torsion and extension. Torsion springs will sit about the garage door and extension springs run along the top portion of the track on either side.
The tube shaft is directly above the door. It holds the torsion springs in place, meaning the torsion power can be transferred to the drum in order to raise the door. Only the doors that are using torsion springs will have this piece of hardware.
The drums will sit on both ends of the torsion bar. They will spin as the door goes up or down. They help to stabilize the door and keep the cables taught so the entire system stays balanced.
Lifting cables will run vertically on each side of the door. Each cable connects to the door at the bottom and the drum at the top. They are the connecting piece that transfers the force from the spring and makes the door easier to lift up.
Rollers will move along the track and let the door travel smoothly. They are generally made from steel or nylon. They can affect the amount of noise a garage door system will make. Nylon tends to be the quieter of the two.
This is a metal or plastic piece that runs along the bottom of the door and holds the bottom seal in place. They come in different styles and are typically replaced with a bottom seal because of the close connection.
If you have any garage door needs or you’re looking to install yourself, then you can find plenty of hardware at MidState OHD. They have everything necessary for this kind of task.
